Language at the Center
At SLACF we do not look at language merely as a class to be taught. We look at language as the foundation upon which classes are taught. Language isn't something students only study. It's how they experience our academy.
Designed for Visual Access
At SLACF, language access begins with the environment itself. Classrooms and shared spaces are intentionally designed around visual communication, with clear sight lines and layouts that allow students to see teachers, peers, demonstrations, and one another. From classroom instruction to emergency alerts, important information is designed to be seen and understood.
How Language Comes to Life
ASL Access
ASL provides students with direct access to communication, instruction, relationships, and learning. Students have opportunities to develop and use ASL throughout their school experience—not only during designated language instruction.
Language Modeling
Teachers and staff model rich, accessible language throughout the day. Instruction meets students at their current language abilities and uses ASL, English, gestures, demonstrations, and visual supports to help students understand and acquire increasingly complex language.
English Development
English development is intentionally supported alongside ASL. Students build literacy, comprehension, vocabulary, and confidence in English through meaningful experiences and instruction.
Communication Across Subjects
Language is woven throughout the entire curriculum. Students use language to explore math, science, the arts, social studies, projects, outdoor learning, and everyday problem-solving—not simply in a language class.
Bilingual Communication
Students develop the ability to communicate across ASL and English in ways that are meaningful to them. Rather than treating one language as a replacement for another, SLACF supports students in developing and using both.
Family Involvement
Language development continues beyond the school day. SLACF encourages families to participate in their child's language journey and provides opportunities for families to build their own understanding and use of ASL and English.
